Fire-rated doors are designed to stop the spread of fire, smoke, and heat during an emergency, giving occupants more time to evacuate safely and allowing firefighters to control the situation more effectively. A fire-rated door is not just a compliance requirement. it’s your first defense against financial loss. They stop fire or smoke from spreading across the building, keeping it confined to one area or room. This gives people valuable time to escape safely while minimizing property loss.
Building owners or operators are responsible to take measure to reduce risk as given in BCP. Their legal responsibilities include reduction of risk of fire spreading within the premises. Fire doors play an important part in reducing this risk in most buildings.
Fire doors are a legal requirement in all non-domestic properties, such as businesses, commercial premises, and public buildings. They are also required in multistoried (2+) residential flats and houses of multiple occupancy, as set out by the BCP Fire Safety Provisions - 2016. For a private separate premises, fire doors are not mandatory. However, it is advisable to install fire doors in high-risk areas, for example the kitchen, rooms having lots of electrical devices, or doors facing outside if neighboring structure may be at risk of fire, or to stop smoke from outside or from attached garage. Another advantage of Steel Fire Doors is that they are strong normally insulated and can also act as barrier against break-in. Steel Fire doors can be painted to meet the esthetic requirements of the architect.
Fire doors are manufactured in many materials. The most robust and economical fire doors are made of steel, they can be made in ratings from 30 to 180 minutes or more. The doors are painted, or powder coated to meet the most stringent esthetics requirements of Architects. They can also be coated to look like wood. In Pakistan the test procedures manufacturers use is specified in BS 476-22:1987 or BS EN 1634-1:2014.
Fire Doors have to meet stringent international specifications and have to be tested. They can be tested by Accredited Third Party inspectors or better still certified by an accredited Certification Body. The difference is that with testing there is only assurance that the door tested meets the specification, whether rest of production is also same is the user’s responsibility. On the other hand, Certification of door insures that all the supply meets specifications through procedural assessment, quality control and audit. Thus, giving the purchaser peace of mind that the whole supply will meet specification.
